Director Anna Maria Tato couldn’t have chosen a better title for her portrait of Italian legend Marcello Mastroianni, the great actor and her companion for 22 years. Mastroianni is not so much a subject as a host in the tour of his life, regaling the audience with anecdotes and pondering his career with a seriousness leavened by an amiable self-deprecation. We wander through his career on the stage with an array of stills and a few rare recordings, and his career in the cinema with a bounty of generous clips (which are, frustratingly, unidentified on screen) and a smattering of behind-the-scenes footage. I Remember is hardly probing or analytical, and the most controversial statement you’ll find is Mastroianni’s repudiation of the “Latin lover” label (”a crazy, stupid idea. It cheapens me”). What you get is a glimpse of his often overlooked range of projects and parts; engaging stories about such directors as Federico Fellini, Luchino Visconti, and Vittorio De Sica; and the offbeat sensibility of an actor who delighted in parodying his image (his dream projects, he confesses, are playing an old Tarzan and a deaf mute in a wheelchair: “to pander to my laziness… maybe I’d even win an Oscar”). At over three hours, the film takes its own lazy time, but that tongu-in-cheek charmer Marcello is a relaxed, amiable, inviting personality, good company and a delightful storyteller. –Sean Axmaker

This live recording of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in D Minor, Op. 125 (The Choral Symphony) from the Gewandhaus concert hall in Leipzig, Germany, features Kurt Masur conducting the Gewandhaus Orchestra and Chorus with soloists Venceslava Hruba-Freiberger (soprano), Doris Soffel (mezzo), James Wagner (tenor) and Gwynne Howell (bass). Written in 1824, Beethoven’s “Ninth Symphony” was his last major work, and it is not only the final step in his symphonic developement, but also a glorification that sums up all that went before. 72 minutes.

The master detective Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone) and his faithful cohort Dr. Watson (Nigel Bruce) are back, preserved and digitally restored in 35mm to original condition by the UCLA Film and Television Archive. This newly restored version of the classic film includes the period war bond tag, studio logo and credits from its original theatrical release. Filled with ominous shadows and interesting camera angles, the visual beauty of the film in 35mm is stunning.
A British secret service operative, carrying top-secret microfilm from England to Washington, disappears while traveling to his destination. Fearing for his safety just before his disappearance, he passes the microfilm, ingeniously hidden, to another passenger on the train without her knowing. The agent is reported missing and Sherlock Holmes is called in to investigate.
Filmed during World War II, SHERLOCK HOLMES IN WASHINGTON pits Holmes and Watson against Nazi enemy agents. The British government asks Holmes and Watson go to Washington to recover the missing documents before they fall into the wrong hands, which would be disastrous for England and her allies. Holmes is up against an international ring of spies in a race against time to piece together the clus and discover the whereabouts of the microfilm before it is too late. Preserved and restored in 35mm by the UCLA Film and Television Archive.

Ice Cube triumphantly returns as Calvin Palmer, proud proprietor of a neighborhood barbershop in Barbershop 2. The first Barbershop was a surprise smash; even more surprising is how good this sequl is. The plot isn’t much–there’s a corporate haircutting chain opening across the street, leading to the usual sentiments about the importance of small businesses and neighborhoods–but the well-conceived characters and the loose, genuine banter give this movie a striking richness of feeling. Barbershop 2 cuts back and forth in time, flashing back to when Eddie (garrulous Cedric the Entertainer), the shop’s oldest and most outspoken barber, first came to work for Calvin’s father. Glimpses of black history give weight to the modern-day struggles; most impressively, this device doesn’t feel forced or cynical. Also returning are Eve, Troy Garity, and Sean Patrick Thomas; QUn Latifah (Bringing Down the House) is a new face on the block. –Bret Fetzer
